A self-proclaimed "tree-hugging nature lover," Patrick Mershon left Carmel, Indiana, for Gambier, Ohio, to major in biology with a concentration in environmental studies. While he began looking at Kenyon because his older sister, Erin, was a student, he ultimately chose Kenyon for its "beautiful surroundings and mix of agricultural and forested land." He has put his passion for the outdoors into practice as president of the Land Lords, a student organization that helps maintain and improve Kenyon's Brown Family Environmental Center. When he's not enjoying Kenyon's 480-acre nature preserve, Patrick can be found tutoring in the Math and Science Skills Center or singing with the Stairwells, Kenyon's premier "acoustapella" musical group. "The freedom to do so many different and wonderful things simultaneously is definitely part of the unique magic of Kenyon," says Patrick, who plans to earn a graduate degree in plant science or resource management.
